Boca Raton
The name Boca Raton is Spanish for “mouth of the rat.” Not a real rat, but a description of the peninsula jutting out, given by Spanish sailors. Although it dates back to the 19th century, Boca Raton really got started during the 1920’s, when famed architect Adison Mizner designed many regal mansions and the Boca Raton Hotel. During World War II, many servicemen were stationed at the airbase, (now the City of Boca Raton Airport) and they made Florida their permanent home.
Today, there are approximately 75,000 persons living in greater Boca Raton. It has become an affluent area, famous for beautiful landscaping, high-end homes and strict zoning, which have largely kept out billboards and large commercial signs. Famous personalities who live or have lived in Boca Raton include Jon Bon Jovi; comedian “Carrot Top”, Pete Rose, Chris Everet and Rush Limbaugh. It is the home to many cultural centers, including the Boca Raton Museum; Caldwell Theatre; the Lynn Conservatory of Music and Florida Atlantic University.
